Good for the Soil and Soul

Starting with 20 acres and a vision of healthy organic trees, Kara and Jake are stepping into a new almond farming path. Kara and Jake both grew up on conventional almond farms which created a love of the rural and farming life. However, now they are ready to see their desire of regenerative farming practices come to life. The health of the land and the soil is an important component of farming. From the beginning of the growing season to harvest they have carefully selected organic materials to assist their almonds to reach their fullest, healthiest potential. Soil health is crucial to the health of the tree and nut, so they have worked closely with Apical Labs to be sure everything they do is good for the soil...which in turn, is good for the soul.

  • Orchard Nutrition

We continually consult with individuals whom we feel are experts in organic farming. Apical Crop Science is a group with common goals to organic farming. They call it regenerative, which is the idea that soil health and organic practices keep the land and crops happy. Click below for a link to Apical Website. • Weed Control

This is our first year converting our orchard into an organic farm. We are not yet certified organic, because it takes 3 years. Since January 2023 we have utilized mowing and hand labor to keep our orchards looking nice. In the coming years we will be either burning or using weed cloth to combat weeds. We will inform our customers what the plan is as we research and develop what will work best for our farm.

  • Steam Pasteurization

In a perfect world an unpasteurized nut would be wonderful. However, At Tov Acres we also need to keep safety in mind. Steam pasteurization was the best choice. The nut is sanitized with steam rather than chemicals and research has shown that the steam process does not change the integrity of the nut. Click the link below to check out our steam pasteurization partner, Capay Canyon. GREAT NEWS...Steamed nuts can still be sprouted!

Meet The Spooners, located in Arbuckle, Ca on a beautiful piece of land with views of the smallest mountain range in the world, The Sutter Buttes.

Kara, the main Tov Acres dreamer, is a full time middle school math teacher, mom and hobby flower gardener. Tov Acres was dreamed out of the necessity of wanting a healthy and clean snack option for her own kids and realized others would benefit from this endeavor as well.

Jake, Kara's main supporter and husband, is the President of Henderson Farms and has all the contacts in the almond farming community. He is one of the best at growing almond trees in Colusa County. Jake envisions growing the best looking and tastiest almonds for their customers.

Eli, Easton and Scarlett, well they are along for the ride...and they hope to find a few paying jobs along the way.
